Just Keep Fishing Rank by Role, Not Dollars
Fish jobs and skill-tree nodes after the 27 August 2026 launch — capacity first, sticker prices last.
Just Keep Fishing launched on 27 August 2026 as a short incremental about casting into crowded water, dumping the haul at the barrel, and spending every dollar on a blue skill tree. The number floating over a catch is not a rank. Sell prices, node costs, and even the $34T late haul all scale with what you already bought. A squid that looks like a jackpot can lose to a bobber stacked with pond fish. A backpack that is full earns nothing no matter what is swimming offshore.
These pages rank roles: what a catch or a node does to the loop. Use the Fish Tier List when you are staring at water. Use the Upgrade Tier List when you are on the tree with GO FISH! in the corner. Press Space or click that button to leave the tree and start the next island day.
If you have not sold your first barrel yet, park this hub and open Getting Started plus the controls. Come back after you can fill a pack on purpose. The walkthrough and how to make money fast tell you when an island opens; the lists below tell you what to hook and buy once you are there.
How to read the ranks
- Role beats sticker price. Golden fish multiply coins. Commons fill the pack. Squid occupy a lot of pixels. Those are different jobs.
- Capacity is income. Backpack size, max fish per bobber, and extra rods decide whether water turns into cash. Value nodes only matter after the pack actually fills.
- Biome is part of the rank. Reef water stamped 2X and lava islands change which species you should stand next to. The fish list treats location as a job, not flavor text.
- Pets and toys are not sell-fish. The turtle lands on the island as a companion. Penguins belong to a timed throw minigame. Ranking them as “bad fish” is the wrong category.
- Costs go exponential. A late tree screenshot still shows Max Fish Per Bobber at 10, with the next rank costing $2.5B for +5 while the wallet reads $124.13B. That curve is why “buy the expensive node” is not always the right role.
| List | Rank this | Do not rank this |
|---|---|---|
| Fish | Multiplier, volume, biome premium, pet, minigame | One screenshot’s dollar value |
| Upgrades | Nodes that let you fill, stack, and sell | Joke zoom, late dump, novelty |
Fish list in one paragraph
Commons are the early dollar tap and, once bobbers stack, the volume engine. Clownfish are the first “worth more” species from the demo onward. Squid and giant squid look like the prize and often are not, once a bobber can lift a pile of small fish. Golden fish exist to multiply coins. Late-game gold and yellow giants are the payload behind the $34T screenshot. Reef-colored fish matter because they sit in 2X water. Lava catches pay the volcanic island, then you leave. The turtle is a pet — how to catch the turtle is a companion page, not a sell guide. Penguins are throwables, not the cash loop.
Upgrade list in one paragraph
S is backpack size (you cannot earn if you are full), max fish per bobber, and extra rods or lines. A is lure range, cast distance, magnets, and sell-value nodes after the pack fills in seconds. B is movement speed, fish density, and extra fishermen who catch in the background. C is novelty, late dump nodes, and the unlimited skill-tree zoom joke that is not a power. Yellow delivery crates sit beside that table: reviewers call them overpowered once they start landing. Use them, then reset your expectations on a New Game Plus run instead of rewriting the whole S-tier around one crate streak.
Plan a shopping order on the upgrade planner rather than clicking every lit node. Specs for the client live on system requirements. After a patch, re-check launch notes before you trust an old screenshot of the tree.
A session that respects the ranks
- Cast until the backpack is the bottleneck, then buy capacity — not a prettier fish node.
- When schools sit outside the dotted lure ring, buy range and cast distance.
- When you can fill the pack in a few pulls, buy magnets and sell-value.
- Chase biome fish only after the walkthrough says that island is open.
- If you are collecting rather than racing cash, swap to achievements instead of forcing S-tier buys.
- For a verdict on the loop itself, read the review. Destinations sit on links. Broader how-tos live in Guides and extra helpers in Tools. Patch history sits under Updates.
The lists stay useful because they refuse to freeze a dollar amount. A clownfish that felt rich on island one is not S after gold fish and 2X water exist. A squid that fills the screen is still a B role if stacked pond fish pay more. When a new island makes the table feel wrong, come back here: the jobs stay, the dollars do not.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers on islands, upgrades, the turtle, and launch week.
Why not rank fish by the dollar value on screen?
Those numbers scale with backpack, bobber stack, sell-value nodes, and biome labels such as 2X water. The Fish Tier List ranks jobs — multiplier, volume, spectacle, pet — so a $34T screenshot does not pretend to be a starter table.
I just launched. Which list do I open first?
Play the Getting Started guide and learn controls first. Then buy S-tier capacity on the Upgrade Tier List before you hunt named fish.
Is the turtle a good fish to sell?
No. The turtle is a pet that lands on the island, not a sell-fish. Follow how to catch the turtle if you want the companion, and do not put it in the barrel.
How do I leave the skill tree?
Press Space or click GO FISH! in the corner of the blue tree. That ends the shop screen and starts the next island day with whatever nodes you bought.
Do yellow delivery crates break these ranks?
They become overpowered once they land often, which is why the upgrade list tells you to use them and then reset expectations on New Game Plus instead of rebuilding S-tier around crates. Capacity nodes still gate whether you can hold what they dump.
