Penguin Kicker

Penguin Kicker is a timed ice minigame that interrupts the boat ride between some islands in Just Keep Fishing. It is not a fishing island. It is not the ice biome you walk after you sail. The screenshot that makes this obvious is the one with an orange 0:18 timer over a floe, an open treasure chest on a yellow sand patch, gold coins bursting off a big blue crystal, and a crowd of penguins waddling through the spray. The red fox stands in the middle of that mess. Steam reviewer heisjj called the minigame a riot, then added the line this page exists to explain: “I’m still miffed at the penguin that stole my big diamond.”

Set Sail Games has not published a written rule sheet. This guide describes what launch screenshots, the 10 June 2026 demo, and player reports actually show. If a prompt on your build disagrees, trust the prompt.

For island order around the ice, use the island walkthrough. For the cash loop that still pays the boat, use how to make money fast. Diamonds that scatter after a sell belong on gems and loot. The green turtle is a later pet, not a penguin: how to catch the turtle.

Ice penguins versus Penguin Kicker

The ice island is a real fishing stage. Penguins walk that snow even when no timer is running. Demo videos already show you can throw them. That throw is a toy. You are still filling a backpack and walking to a barrel. Wood and logs still gate the boat. Throwing a penguin does not buy a skill-tree node and it does not replace a dump with E.

Penguin Kicker is a different contract. It loads between some islands, not as a side activity you open from the hut. The fishing HUD goes away. A countdown sits at the top of the screen. A treasure chest sits on the ice with coins and colored loot around it. Penguins fill the floe. Your job for those seconds is the chest, the coins, and the birds that are trying to walk off with the good stuff.

Do not mix the two in your head. If you are still casting into cold water with a coin counter like $6019 and a turtle hopping nearby, you are on the ice island. If you are staring at 0:18 with no barrel and a chest on yellow sand, you are in Penguin Kicker.

What the screenshot is telling you

The launch screenshot is the closest thing this wiki has to a diagram:

  • Orange timer, currently 0:18. That is remaining time in a captured frame, not a published start clock. This page will not invent the opening number.
  • An open wooden chest on a yellow sandy circle. Colored orbs sit in the box. That is the prize you came for.
  • Gold coins spraying, especially off a large blue crystal that reads as the “big diamond” heisjj lost.
  • Dozens of penguins on the floe and on icebergs in the water. They are obstacles and thieves, not a school of fish.
  • The fox in the coin burst. You are supposed to be moving, not watching.
  • Icebergs around the floe. Falling in the water wastes the timer.

The chest coins are a burst. They are not a second economy. If you skip the minigame, you skip that burst. If you play it badly, a penguin walks off with the diamond and you keep the joke instead of the loot.

How to play the timed chest

There is no official combo list. Play what the screen shows.

Walk the fox with WASD the same way you walk a dock. The camera is still top-down. Get to the chest first. The yellow sand patch is the landmark. Interact with the chest and take the coins that explode out of it. Demo ice already taught throwing penguins; if the minigame still lets you throw, use it on birds that are standing on the loot or running away with a crystal. Confirm the throw prompt on that screen. Do not assume the fishing click is the throw. Do not mash Space and open the skill tree in the middle of the countdown. Space is GO FISH! on islands. Penguin Kicker is not the tree.

Priority while the timer is live:

  1. Open the chest, or stand on it, so the coins spawn on you instead of on a penguin.
  2. Pick the large crystal / diamond before a bird reaches it. That is the object heisjj lost.
  3. Throw or shove penguins that are sitting on the yellow patch.
  4. Sweep remaining coins toward the fox. Do not tour icebergs for one stray bird.
  5. When the timer hits zero, take whatever you grabbed and get back on the boat.

You will miss some coins. That is the joke. A perfect clear is not documented and this wiki will not pretend there is a three-star ranking. The useful outcome is: you got the chest burst, you did not donate the diamond, you are sailing again.

If the minigame caught you off guard the first time, that is also documented player behavior. Demo footage of between-island breaks has people saying they missed the first seconds because they did not know a minigame was loading. When the boat ride suddenly becomes ice and a timer, start moving immediately. Do not wait for a tutorial card that may never arrive.

Why penguins steal valuables

Penguins in Penguin Kicker are not scenery. They path across the same coins and crystals you want. A bird that reaches the big diamond first is a theft, not a glitch. heisjj’s review is the named proof: the minigame was a riot and a penguin stole the diamond. Both things are true at once.

Treat the flock as a moving lid on the chest. If you stand still to admire the burst, the lid closes. If you throw the nearest penguin and walk through the coins, you keep more of the burst. Throwing is slapstick with a purpose here. On the ice fishing island, throwing is optional flavor. In Penguin Kicker, a throw that clears the crystal is the difference between a diamond and a story you tell later.

This is also why gem chasing on islands is a different problem. Island gems scatter out of the selling bin after you press E. Penguins in Kicker steal during a countdown. One is a sell-loop annoyance covered on gems and loot. The other is a short heist. Do not buy a recovery node hoping it will police Penguin Kicker. Do not wait for the turtle to hop into the minigame and Hoover the floe. The pet walks islands. It does not referee penguins.

This is not the cash loop

Just Keep Fishing still prints coins from catch → backpack → barrel. Extra rods, backpack size, 2X water, and yellow crates are how the HUD reaches millions and then billions. Penguin Kicker is a between-island bonus. Play it. Take the chest. Then go back to fishing.

Do not reset islands to farm Kicker. The walkthrough is clear: logs feed the boat, upgrades persist, Kicker coins are a bonus. Wood still gates the next shore. A chest burst will not replace a backpack upgrade. If money is stalling, that is a money problem, not a penguin problem.

The fish tier list already ranks penguins as not-sell-fish. Believe that ranking. The upgrade planner will not have a “more penguins” node that matters. Spend on capacity and lines. Laugh at the diamond thief. Sail.

Do not skip it

Skipping is the only way to guarantee you get zero chest coins. The minigame is short. The 27 August 2026 launch is a two-hour island chain. You are not saving a meaningful amount of time by mashing through the timer. You are throwing away the one ice joke reviewers actually named.

If you hate the chase, still open the chest. Stand on the yellow sand, grab what explodes at your feet, and ignore the iceberg penguins. That is a worse run than throwing, and it is still better than skipping. The diamond is extra. The chest is the point.

When the timer ends, you are back in the boat loop. Collect logs. Sell fish. Buy the next node. Penguin Kicker will show up between some islands again; this wiki will not invent a list of exactly which crossings trigger it. If the boat loads ice and a countdown, play.

After the floe

The ice fishing island is still waiting with its own penguins, its own barrel, and usually a green turtle walking the snow. Those penguins can still be thrown. They are not running a chest timer. Fish the cold water, dump the pack with E, and keep the boat fed. If gems start spraying off the sell, that is the gems page, not a second Kicker.

Binds for walking, casting, and selling sit on controls. The first-hour loop sits on getting started. The honest tone check sits on the review. If you only came here to keep the diamond: move first, throw second, leave the turtle out of it.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers on islands, upgrades, the turtle, and launch week.

When does Penguin Kicker happen?

Between some islands, as a timed break, not as a mode you open from the hut. The ice fishing island has walking penguins even when no timer is up. If you see an orange countdown and a chest, you are in Kicker. Follow the walkthrough for the ice shore itself.

Can I throw penguins outside the minigame?

Yes. Demo videos already show throwable penguins on ice. That throw is a toy on the fishing island. In Penguin Kicker, throwing birds off the chest is how you keep the diamond.

Should I skip Penguin Kicker to save time?

No, not if you want the chest coins. The minigame is short. Skipping is the only way to guarantee you get none of the burst. Open the chest, grab the spray, then sail. Logs still gate the boat either way.

Why did a penguin steal my diamond?

Penguins path onto the same crystals and coins you want. Steam reviewer heisjj lost a big diamond that way and still called the minigame a riot. Move to the loot first. Throw the bird that is standing on it. Island gem spray after a sell is a different chase on gems and loot.

Is Penguin Kicker how I make money?

No. The cash loop is still catch, backpack, barrel. See how to make money fast. Kicker is a burst. Wood and logs still buy the next island.

Does the turtle help in Penguin Kicker?

No. Catch it later as a hopping pet. It does not Hoover Kicker coins and it does not stop diamond theft. The catch itself is on how to catch the turtle.
